'Towards Goodwood'

Carolyn Bates - An army childhood, marriage to an Australian and a successful career as a freelance landscape photographer have involved Carolyn Bates in worldwide travel and sown the seeds of appreciation and enthusiasm for art and culture on many levels. She has received two Arts Council Awards and exhibited her work in many publications.

She was drawn to printmaking and sculpture and a Diploma in the History of Modern Art led her to take up painting as her preferred medium. The main concern of her work is to explore in abstract and semi-abstract form, the relationship between landscape and her own emotional response to nature and how it feels to experience that. Influenced by William Turner, Richard Diebenkorn and Peter Lanyon, she is excited by the energy reflected in colour, space and form. She enjoys the pure physicality of paint and other markmaking media, combined with the tensions created between light and dark, horizontal and vertical, shape and line. She seeks to distil and balance the geometry and colour harmony she sees and convey her enjoyment for the materials involved.

Exhibitions include The Orangery, Holland Park, London; The Commonwealth Institute, London; The British Airways Centre, London and Open Studios, Richmond.
