'Countryside in Colour'

'Fruit & Flowers'

Cynthia Spiers has always enjoyed looking at pictures, but only started painting in 1983 when her husband retired. She had no formal training so joined Winchester Art Club to meet like-minded people, to find teachers, attend lectures and demonstrations and courses, and to have the opportunity to submit pictures to a selected exhibition.

She worked traditionally until 1997 when she joined Robin Child’s Art Research Centre at Wedhampton. Each morning starts with a lecture (with slides) seeing and studying the work of different artists – followed by a session of drawing to structure. After lunch the palette is mixed and painting can then start.

The magic and excitement of the organised palette laid out in three tones - dark and light, warm to cool, bright and tertiary - enables the artist to paint quickly with confidence. This was the start of her journey into colour; from a very dull painter she became a colourist.

She owes this to the inspirational teaching of Robin Child, and also to the camaraderie of the other students - without these she could not have advanced so far. She now feels confident to continue her journey with colour into abstraction.
