Gay Grossart’s work is founded on an unsparing integrity of eye and hand. It reflects an instinctive use of bright colour with a strong fluidity and confidence in the handling of paint. She is constantly self challenging in her creative journey and in seeking new perspectives through which to observe and express the world which she encounters. A valued stimulus to her work has been her considerable travel, which has encouraged her abstraction of the landscape. India has been a profound influence, where the natural and spiritual are inextricably combined and the characters and organic life are resonant with timeless qualities and elemental messages which Gay tries to express.
She has consistently strengthened her drawing qualities, particularly of the human form. This has lead to perceptive portraits, acute in their observation of the human condition, and powerful in their execution.
Influences on her work include Vaughan, Soutine, Bomberg, and Matisse has always inspired her to bolder challenges and expressions of her fertile imagination and visions of colour. Lanyon and Kline have also influenced her progress and aspirations, as has Joan Eardley, with whom Gay has a sense of Scottish identity. The challenges of space, form and movement are always clearly evident in her artistic compass. |
