'Simon a la KV'

'Simon Standing'

Patricia Gould - Following her first career teaching mathematics, she found time in her life when she could explore ways of expressing herself visually. She spent the next fifteen years investigating the landscapes of Exmoor, France, Spain and Morocco, recording her responses in charcoal, paint and pastel - increasingly abstract in form. Recently she has been sketching the ancient landscapes of Glastonbury and the Somerset levels and turning them into paintings back in her studio on the slopes of Chalice Hill.

The human form constantly challenges her as an artist. Her paintings and charcoal drawings express the rhythms that she picks up from both the model and his surroundings. Her abstraction makes use of many of the concepts and codes that are second nature to her as a mathematician. Recently, for example, she has been pursuing the geometry of the Fibonacci Spiral when structuring a landscape.

She loves sharing her enthusiasm for painting with others so she much enjoys spending time working with the artists of the Rosvik Collective and running teaching courses in Oil Painting and Releasing Creativity. This gives her an opportunity to learn from the groups both as a teacher and as a participant. It is wonderful for her, therefore, that her first and second careers are integrated in her current work.
