Susan Kirkman was originally a radiation physicist in the NHS. Her science background probably explains her enthusiasm for experimenting with varied media, methods, and styles. It also accounts for her enjoyment of the technical aspects as well as the artistic qualities of various printing techniques.

She produces oils, acrylics, pastels, etchings and monotypes, and hopes never to become the sort of artist who, having found a successful formula, continues to repeat it indefinitely. Put simply, her aim is to develop and improve her work.
